Its taken me years to grow this think skin
But now I'm too afraid to start breaking it in

In this hot southern swamp its starting to shrink
And it's squeezing my bones a bit too tight I think

The past that I buried gets dug up here daily
And the woman I married says I just look crazy

Its 90 degrees and your drinking black coffee
Two Dollars a cup but the second one's free
Now your eyes are all charged with caffeine
so its easy to see how uncomfortable I seem to be

In my thick skin

I'm spittin up coals with diamonds inside
But everyone knows that diamonds ain't worth nuthin!
They're just shiny rocks
And there's a whole lot of them

And each word that I speak
Comes out as a puff of ash
